About
Transition Derby looks positively and enthusiastically towards a future of steadily descending energy consumption.
A future in which we work collectively and value each other.
With the prospect of the demise of cheap oil we invite you to join with us as we take the issues of Peak Oil and Climate Change into our own hands.
We believe that by unleashing our collective genius, we can creatively plan toward and influence Derby’s energy descent and encourage viable ways of greener living which are more connected, more enriching and which recognise the biological limitations of our planet.
The Transition approach is fresh in that it integrates local and global issues that we as a community face in a down to earth way.
Derby’s ability to remain resilient during the challenges ahead will depend largely on our ability to coalesce expertise, knowledge and collective experience.
Esteemed citizens of Derby must be at the heart of this dream.
There are 40 other towns and cities engaged in similar transition activity in Britain alone with new ones forming all the time.
We believe that it can happen in Derby too!
About the Transition Town Model
The Transition model was first put to practice around 2005 in Kinsale, Country Cork, and was popularised by Rob Hopkins. The Transition Model is a loose set of realworld principles and practices that have been built up over time though experimentation and observation of communities as they drive forward to build local resilience and reduce carbon emissions. The practical and positive examples set have inspired people all around the world, the Transition Town Network is now global.
Underpinning the Transition model:
• Climate Change and Peak Oil require urgent action.
• Life with less energy is inevitable and it is better to plan for it than be taken by surprise.
• Industrial society has lost the resilience to be able to cope with energy shocks.
• We have to act together and we have to act now.
• Regarding the world economy and the consumptive patterns within it, as long as the laws of physics apply, infinite growth within a finite system (such as planet earth) simply isn’t possible.
• We demonstrated phenomenal levels of ingenuity and intelligence as we raced up the energy curve over the last 150 years, and there’s no reason why we can’t use those qualities, and more, as we negotiate our way down from the peak of the energy mountain.
• If we plan and act early enough, and use our creativity and cooperation to unleash the genius within our local communities, then we can build a future that could be far more fulfilling and enriching, more connected and more gentle on the earth than the lifestyles we have today.
