Guardian – A post-oil world gets less sci-fi by the day

Just think back to summer last year when oil prices spiked to $150 a barrel – 10 times the level of a decade earlier. In petrol stations in some European countries, people started to drive off without paying and drivers had to be banned from filling cars before they had paid up. In Britain, people stole heating oil out of the tanks that sit outside many houses in the country.

The Hungry for One World event was an afternoon with Derby Forum of Faiths www.ffderby.org.uk and Transition Derby UK www.transitionderby.co.uk – sharing bread from different cultures, looking at how our food supply is changing and seeing what we can do about it. A broad age range was in attendance of various religions, cultures and community groups.

I was sceptical about the idea of a permaculture blitz. It sounded like a contradiction in terms because one of the principles in permaculture is to use small and slow solutions. In fact the  action day achieved many things that demonstrated beautifully what the transition movement and permaculture are all about.

Visit to the School of the Built Environment, University of Nottingham

As part of a Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire chamber of Commerce presentation on Environmentally Sustainable Construction at the unique state-of-the-art Sir Colin Campbell Building, there was an opportunity to visit the award winning University of Nottingham Jubilee campus and take the optional tour around six recently completed ‘emissions-free homes’.
